Türkiye’s Parliament Speaker, Numan Kurtulmuş, has expressed optimism that an upcoming disarmament process involving the PKK and its affiliates could bolster stability in Iraq and aid broader peace initiatives throughout the region. During discussions in Ankara with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Heybet Halbusi, Kurtulmuş indicated that this process, slated to commence next month, would potentially enhance peace and security not only in Iraq but also in Syria.

Kurtulmuş emphasized that this initiative is integral to Türkiye’s overarching goals of establishing a “terror-free Türkiye” and a “terror-free region.” He urged for increased regional cooperation and the resolution of persistent divisions. Highlighting the improving relations between Türkiye and Iraq, he referenced several agreements and memorandums achieved during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s 2024 visit to Iraq, as well as further strategic agreements following the Iraqi Prime Minister’s July visit to Türkiye.

The Development Road Project emerged as another focal point of collaboration. This planned transport corridor is designed to enhance connectivity between Asia and Europe by passing through Iraq and Türkiye, ultimately supporting economic growth across the region. Kurtulmuş underscored Türkiye’s full support for expediting the project’s progress, expressing hopes that all components can become operational swiftly.

Kurtulmuş described the Development Road Project as more than just an economic endeavor. He envisions it as a means to connect communities, cities, and cultures through mutually advantageous cooperation. This perspective underscores the multifaceted benefits that such infrastructure projects can bring, beyond their economic implications.
