Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has assured investors that their interests will be safeguarded amid an ongoing investigation into suspected irregularities in the country’s capital markets. As authorities delve into potential misconduct involving several investment funds, Erdoğan emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring economic stability and protecting investor assets.
The investigation has prompted the Capital Markets Board to halt trading of certain funds managed by seven portfolio management companies and initiate their liquidation. Erdoğan has tasked a fully authorized board, led by the vice president, to manage the liquidation process. Additionally, the State Supervisory Council has been instructed to engage in overseeing these efforts.
Judicial actions have accompanied these regulatory measures, with five individuals apprehended in connection to the investigation. Prosecutors are focusing on allegations of fraud, money laundering, and breaches of capital market laws as they scrutinize the transactions in question.
Erdoğan reassured that the issues being addressed are confined to a specific segment of the fund market. He stressed that the government’s approach aims to hold those responsible for any wrongdoing accountable, while simultaneously working to prevent any adverse impact on Türkiye’s broader financial system.
By taking decisive actions, Turkish authorities aim to maintain investor confidence and uphold the integrity of the nation’s financial markets. Erdoğan’s statements reflect a proactive stance in dealing with the crisis, highlighting the government’s resolve to bolster economic stability despite the ongoing challenges.
