Advanced Technology Enforces Traffic Laws, Cuts Violations by 93% in Türkiye

Türkiye has witnessed a remarkable reduction in dangerous driving violations after implementing stringent traffic laws and bolstering enforcement measures earlier this year. The amendments to Türkiye’s Highway Traffic Law, which took effect on February 27, introduced harsher penalties targeting offenses that pose significant risks to road safety. This legislative change has yielded substantial improvements across several categories of traffic violations.

One of the most significant outcomes of the new laws is the dramatic decline in dangerous lane-weaving violations, where drivers dangerously switch lanes at high speeds. Official statistics highlight that between February 27 and May 31 last year, authorities recorded 47,380 such offenses, a figure that plummeted to just 3,306 during the same period this year, marking a 93% decrease. Officials credit this substantial drop to the strengthened penalties and the increase in nationwide road inspections.

Beyond lane-weaving, other traffic violations have also seen notable reductions. Tachograph-related offenses, which pertain to commercial vehicle driving and rest-time records, have diminished by 80.2%. Speeding violations have been curtailed by 55.1%, while failures to comply with police stop orders have fallen by 52.4%. Additionally, helmet-related violations have decreased by 36.4%, and instances of driving without a valid license have been reduced by 33.7%.

The crackdown extends to other areas as well, with authorities reporting fewer incidents of wrong-way driving, traffic sign violations, red-light offenses, drunk driving, and seat belt violations. These measures reflect the government’s broader strategy to enhance road safety, aiming to reduce accidents and better safeguard lives and property throughout the country.
