In response, Yemeni government forces have escalated their offensive against Houthi positions. The military reported executing three airstrikes in the Taiz area, aimed at Houthi strongholds and armaments close to the port city of Mocha on the Red Sea. These developments come in the wake of a week-long Houthi campaign that saw the group seize control over significant portions of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and several key islands, bolstering their presence near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, an essential maritime passageway at the Red Sea’s southern entrance.
Furthermore, the Houthis have declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Red Sea ports, heightening worries about the impact on regional shipping and energy resources. This waterway has gained increased importance for Saudi oil exports, especially amid ongoing disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.
