Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are commemorating the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation with official ceremonies held in Lefkoşa (Nicosia). This event takes place amid ongoing political tensions with the Greek Cypriot administration. Leading the Turkish delegation, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz is in attendance to mark the occasion, underscoring the significance of the commemoration.

In a demonstration of its commitment to regional security and cooperation, Türkiye has dispatched naval vessels to participate in public events, while also planning to open a new maritime traffic monitoring center in Famagusta. The initiative aims to bolster maritime cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, an area of strategic importance.

The anniversary is observed at a time when negotiations over the future of Cyprus remain at a standstill. Turkish Cypriot leaders continue to push for a two-state solution premised on sovereign equality. They have voiced concerns over the lack of international recognition for the TRNC and have criticized the Greek Cypriot authorities for allegedly heightening regional tensions through new military alliances.

Turkish Cypriot officials have reiterated the pivotal role of Türkiye as a guarantor state, emphasizing its importance for the island’s security. Meanwhile, the United Nations is expected to engage in renewed discussions later this month, aiming to revive the stalled Cyprus peace talks and explore potential pathways forward.
