However, this heightened activity by the EU has met with skepticism from Turkish Cypriot authorities, who question the bloc’s ability to act impartially. They argue that the EU’s position is compromised by the fact that the Republic of Cyprus is already a member of the Union. The Turkish Cypriot officials have also expressed dissatisfaction over the EU’s decision to appoint a new envoy for Cyprus without their consultation, which they see as a lack of diplomatic engagement on the EU’s part.
The European Commission has responded by emphasizing the role of its special representative, who is tasked with fostering trust between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The representative’s mission includes supporting efforts to resume negotiations within the UN framework. EU officials have reiterated their commitment to facilitating a permanent solution, underscoring the importance of dialogue and cooperation between the two sides.
The Cyprus conflict, which has persisted for decades, remains unresolved with peace talks at a standstill.
